last night an intelligent and well meaning gentleman told me I was cheaping my art by doing this...He was a great guy so it did not upset me. He knows a lot about marketing. I am simply trying something new, a different paradigm. If you dont risk things you will not grow. I think the only way to cheapen art is to make art you dont believe in for a market. My art comes from a place I don't quite understand and never will completely. You are bound to face some issues when you try something new. I think much of the art I see on elite white walled galleries is dishonest tripe and i think much of america and world feels alienated from art because they are "not art educated"honest art" moves you and stirs feelings in any viewer. Picasso wanted his art to be understood by even a plumber, yet at the same time he was a big part of the reason people feel alienated from the art world. It is a sympton of modern life. We have lost the Dream time and the mystery.

Hello everyone...I am back from city...exhausted and need sleep today..will be back on here tomorrow morning..but you can call me this evening EST after 8. My voice mail keeps filling up so I will address that later. trying to find an assistant as fast as possible. I was once commissioned to make a glass sculpture of this drawing...I was and am a huge fan of alphonse mucha. Not so much his finished works but his drawings are amazing...this drawing is a stiff version of him but I was only 19. it is about 12 inches high and pencil on paper. I think I may have to make this on a bid piece as I am so buried with requests...

Glass Nude

Long ago I took my last 80 dollars and paid a model to pose for me for this piece. I made the piece out of glass and sold it two days later in a gallery for $4,000. I used to be a gambler (or a fool) I always liked this sketch. I am making 100 prints of this for 10 dollars each. I still have original if one wishes to buy but I might charge a lot for that.

Flowers of Pain

I was living in an unfinished basement in East village with no windows or shower. I was very poor and almost went to hospital from malnutrition. I had to shower with a cold hose. I spent a year in hell but I learned a lot and now I have warm showers three times a day. I painted this piece during that period, theres was not much hope in this phase but there was a lot of growing. I read a poet once who spoke about the "flowers of pain" the things of beauty that grow out of pain. In this painting the ground is covered in blood and the flowers have not yet taken root.

Strange World

I painted this alone on Santa Monica Beach by the big Ferris wheel on Thanksgiving. I was in Los Angeles for am month and I felt i was out of place and in a strange world. It was a sunny beautiful day and strangers kept peeking at my work expecting me to be painting the beautiful beach scene etc. this will go for auction in a minute. It is very dear to me this piece. I am very interested in trying to capture a fleeting mood in watercolor, I strive to get down the beauty of peter Gabriel's Passion album into paint and I always come up short. If you want a masterpiece buy that album .
If anyone has that CD I will trade a drawing for it as I lost it.

Fourth Grade Drawing

I came across this today. It is a drawing I made in fourth grade when I was nine. I lived on a farm in Texas it was a very magical existence for a child I still carry that farm with me today. this was a barn and mailbox and it is not for sale but I will put up a few childhood drawings today only 5 though. My mom would die if she knew I was selling any of that work. the bottom right says alex gardega age 9 fourth grade etc...now back to the present...

Back from dinner

Hey guys I answered 400 emails and 150 phone calls today! I am ready for more. I had a beer or three to calm my nerves and almost cried at the response and outpouring of love from america and Ireland and mexico etc! I didnt really think anyone cared that much about my work. I work in mostly a dark depression and loneliness and the hope every has shown me has brightened my world! It seems to be all worthwhile. I have so much art to share. I want to create a community, I dont want to be the center but a member. this is all good stuff.

After Velasquez

This is a famous actress who posed nude for me. Sorry, I can't reveal her name, don't even ask. It is pencil on a small piece of bond paper (7.5" x 9.25 ") I always liked this little page but it too must go. It is ten dollars. I had no relations with this lady.

Portrait of Julian Schnabel

Here is a small drawing I made of my old neighbor and famous artist Julian Schnabel while he was eating lunch with friends. I spoke to him afterwards but did not show him my drawing. He told me he has a new installation at the Met Life building I have yet to see. This drawing is very small (about 2" by 3") and on lined paper. It is a small part of NYC art-history. The restaurant was "The Spotted Pig" my friend Ken Friedman owns. It is a big hot spot these days. This drawing is a steal at ten dollars and I am sad to let it go but it is all about non-attachment.
